The Rise And Fall In Demand For Plastic Surgery

With a range of aesthetic beauty procedures available today, patients are able to choose the best option for them according to their needs, lifestyle and budget. Each year, BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons) releases an official statistics report which outlines the trends in cosmetics surgery.

According to BAAPS, there has been a decrease in glamour model-inspired boob jobs which were popular a few years ago, and now, the new stats reveal Britons have seemed to settle for tweaks as opposed to body transformations. The change in mentality has resulted in the increased popularity of non-invasive procedures compared to the decline in those choosing to go under the knife.

It is also suggested that the downfall shown in these stats could be due to celebrity influencers in today’s society, such as bloggers, models and TV presenters opting for more non-invasive cosmetic procedures rather than undergoing the knife.

The below stats also show that the growing demand for non-invasive beauty procedures rather than surgery today, really highlights the importance of having highly trained and qualified medical doctors who specialise in those treatments to ensure excellence for patients opting for non-invasive beauty procedures.

2016 statistics:

  • Breast augmentation up 12% to 9,652.
  • Eyelid surgery up 12% to 8,689.
  • Face and neck lifts up 16% to 7,419.
  • Breast reductions up 13% to 6,246.
  • Liposuction up 20% to 5,551.
  • Nose jobs up 14% to 4,205.
  • Fat transfer operations up 3% to 3,261.
  • Tummy tucks up 8% to 2,933.

Simon Withey, BAAPS president and consultant plastic surgeon believes that this slump can be seen as positive:

The 2016 BAAPS audit demonstrates that at the very least, patients seem to be getting the message that cosmetic surgery is not a ‘quick fix’ but a serious commitment and are as a result, carefully evaluating risks as well as benefits surgery may offer. If it means people are taking their time to be truly sure a procedure is the right investment for them, then this can only be a good thing.
