Side-Effects of Dermal Filler: What Is Normal?

One of the brilliant things about dermal fillers is that they involve little to no downtime and they offer patients a solution to their aesthetic needs without the need for drastic surgery. That said, dermal fillers are injectables and as such there is always the small risk of unwanted side effects. But, what is normal and what should you contact your practitioner about?

Dermal Filler Side Effects

Bruising and Swelling

At VIVA our practitioners are medical professionals and are highly skilled and experienced so their injecting technique along with dermal fillers placement and  high quality products we use means this is kept to a minimum. However, a small amount of bruising and swelling around the treated area is completely normal and to be expected. We ask that all patients allow a full 14 day period for residual swelling to subside. We can’t make tweaks before this time because we can’t see your true results while swelling and bruising is present.

Pain around the treated area

With a dermal filler treatment we apply anaesthetic cream before every dermal filler procedure to keep pain to a minimum. There is also a numbing agent contained within the Juvederm products we use. Patients do report tenderness at injection sites but this should go down over a few days along with any associated swelling and redness. We ask that patients flag up any alerts to our staff of ongoing severe pain after procedures.

Lumps and bumps

When it comes to dermal filler treatments, you will see immediate results while you are still in the clinic but the product still needs time to settle under the skin. This process can mean that you notice a few small lumps and bumps where the product has been placed. This should subside over 7-10 days. Want more information on lip fillers? Product seems to have worn off

In some cases of dermal filler treatments it can feel like results have lasted a short period of time. This is  because swelling has subsided which can feel like volume has been lost. For example it is quite common for lip filler swelling to continue to worsen over 48 hours following a lip filler treatment and then to go down over the next few days. To see your true results  allow 2 weeks for everything to settle.

Uncommon:

Large, painful lumps

Whilst small lumps and bumps under the skin are quite normal after a dermal filler treatment, if you experience particularly large, painful lumps we recommend contacting the clinic for advice as this may suggest a mild reaction.

Infection:

Spreading redness, increasing pain, pus and a high temperature are all signs of infection which usually develop around the 7 day mark after initial common symptoms have somewhat passed. It’s very uncommon to develop an infection with dermal fillers but its important to visit a healthcare professional to minimize this risk. It’s important to keep the area clean for the first few days, avoid wearing makeup and touching the area for the first 24 hours.

Rare:

Allergic reaction/ anaphylaxis

Allergic reactions to dermal fillers are extremely rare and if it were to happen it would occur immediately after the injections have been administered. Signs would include swelling, redness and itching. Our practitioners are medical professionals and trained to deal with this type of situation.

Vascular Occlusion/Avascular Necrosis

A vascular occlusion is an extremely rare but serious complication associated with the use of hyaluronic acid dermal filler. It occurs when dermal filler is accidentally injected into an artery or the artery is compressed by surrounding dermal filler. Aspiration on insertion of the needle and going to an expert doctor or nurse will help reduce this risk greatly.
