What are Jowls?

Jowls are an area of loose skin below the jaw line that develop with age due to collagen and volume loss. Common signs include drooping cheeks, wrinkles appearing near the corners of the mouth, and sagging skin on either side of the chin. There are a number of different treatments that can be used to get rid of jowls, from surgical interventions such as a facelift or jowl lift to non-surgical options like cosmetic fillers and radiofrequency tightening. Each method has its own set of benefits and limitations; it is important for patients to understand what is best for their particular situation before deciding on a jowl treatment.

The term jowls refers to the area of skin that sags below the jawline as fatty deposits under skin gather in pockets and are weighed down due to the loss of collagen and elastin. These essential proteins and the connective tissues are what keeps our skin taught and retains its ability to bounce back. When these begin to depreciate over time, we start to experience a slackening of the skin and a loss of support to the facial structure. Ageing also causes our bones to shrink, so it stands to reason that in advanced ageing, the skin, muscles and fats that drape the framework of our face will begin to slide.
