Lip Fillers Q&A

In clinic, we get asked a lot about lip fillers. Here are the most frequently asked questions, answered by us.

What are lip fillers?

By injecting light hyaluronic acid-based fillers, lips can look fuller and like they have more volume. At VIVA, we tailor our treatments to individual requirements and facial proportions, always ensuring results are natural looking.

How do they work?

Fillers hydrate and revitalise the lip area, so they don’t just bulk them out. Hyaluronic acid is also produced by your body, so are easily accepted once injected and broken down naturally over several months.

What visible effects can they offer?

As you age, lips will become thinner as they lose volume – a process that usually starts occurring from your mid-twenties! Some people are also born with thinner lips. Introducing small quantities of filler can enhance the appearance of the lips, mainly by changing its shape and size

With dermal filler we can also:

  • Volumise and plump lips
  • Provide definition
  • Balance the profile
  • Improve lip shape
  • Hydrate and smooth lip lines
  • Balance upper and lower lip ratio

Is it normal for lips to be uneven after filler?

The swelling that can often occur after lip fillers can cause the lips to look a little uneven for a short time. This doesn’t necessarily mean that anything has gone wrong and it may just take a little time for the product to fully settle and for residual swelling to subside.

Do lips swell after fillers?

It is very normal to experience a small amount of swelling. This is usually at its worst for the first 2-3 days post procedure.

How long will lip swelling last for after fillers?

Swelling will usually subside within a few days but we do ask clients to allow up to two weeks for this to fully go down. If you are still concerned after this time, we are always on hand to offer aftercare advice or welcome clients back to clinic for a review.

Is Bruising normal after lip fillers?

A small amount of bruising is completely natural following lip fillers and is usually nothing to be concerned about. Bruising is likely to be very minimal but can vary in severity from person to person.

How can I stop my lips from bruising after lip fillers?

Bruising is to be expected but there are a few things you can do to help the recovery process. Ensuring you visit an experienced and highly trained practitioner is extremely important as they will have a better anatomical understanding and be able to use certain techniques to minimise the chance of bruising as much as possible. Post treatment the area should be kept dry and clean and ice and arnica can be applied to help speed up the healing process.

My lips are bleeding after fillers, is this normal?

You may notice some slight bleeding from the injection points but this should subside quickly. To avoid any sort of infection the area should be kept clean.

How long do lips take to heal after fillers?

Treated lips should heal within a few days but we always recommend allowing 2 weeks for them to completely settle. If you have an important event coming up we would recommend allowing 4 weeks to allow any tweaks to be made.

Can I dissolve my lip fillers?

If you are still very unhappy with your results after allowing the product to settle, then dissolving may be the best course of action.

Which brand of lip filler is best?

VIVA Skin Clinics use the highest quality Juvéderm products to ensure the safest and most effective results at our clients. Juvederm VOLIFT has been specifically designed for the lips and mouth area and its smoothness is perfect for adding gentle, natural looking fullness. VOLIFT also contains a local anaesthetic, which works to make the process more comfortable alongside the Topical anaesthetic we use at VIVA.

How long do lip fillers last?

The duration will vary from person to person as everyone is different, but in general you can expect a duration of 6-9 months.

Can you have natural looking lip fillers?

At VIVA, we specialise in natural looking results that enhance our clients’ features rather than change them. We always take a conservative approach to procedures, beginning with a touch of product and adding more if necessary. Generally, for new patients we recommend just 0.5ml to add a subtle volume plump and fine-tune the lips. It’s also important to us to consider every individual and develop a bespoke treatment plan for each and every client, ensuring personal desired results are achieved. We therefore provide in-depth one-to-one consultations with every treatment package.
