Curious what a treatment at VIVA looks like? Watch our treatment demonstration below with the full treatment process with before and afters.
The under-eye area is the most common aging area and prone to making us look tired. The skin under our eye is the thinnest anywhere on the body, sitting over a delicate structure with very little cushioning, which is why it creases, hollows and darkens earlier than the rest of the face and why treatments designed for thicker facial skin often go wrong resulting in an overfilled look
Polynucleotides injections offer a different approach. Rather than adding volume, they improve the quality of the skin itself helping make the eyes appear less tired and more rejuvenated.
The under eye area is different due to the aging process and the thickness of the skin under the eye. The fat pads that cushion the lower lid thin with age, creating a groove between lid and cheek known as the tear trough. The skin above it loses collagen and elastin, becoming crepey and translucent. Underlying vessels start to show through, adding a bluish tone. Fluid can gather in the morning, creating puffiness that casts its own shadow.
The result is an area that looks tired regardless of how much you’ve slept. Overtreatment with filler is easily detected in this area because of how thin the skin is under the eye. Many patients prefer to not have tear trough filler to avoid unnatural results and choose polynucleotide injections instead.
Polynucleotides are purified DNA fragments that act as skin regenerators. Injected into the under-eye area, they stimulate fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen and elastin, gradually thickening and firming skin that has become thin and crepey. They also draw water into the tissue, improving hydration, and have an anti-inflammatory effect that can reduce puffiness.
Because they don’t add volume, they can’t be overfilled. The change is in skin quality: firmer, smoother, better hydrated skin that reflects light more evenly, so shadows soften rather than being physically filled in.
Both treat the under-eye area, but they solve different problems.
Tear trough filler is hyaluronic acid gel placed to fill the hollow directly, correcting volume loss with immediate results. It works well where the primary issue is genuine hollowing but in thin skin it can be visible as lumps, absorb water and create puffiness, or produce a bluish cast known as the Tyndall effect.
Polynucleotides treat skin quality rather than volume, build gradually, and carry none of those risks. They suit crepey texture, fine lines, thin translucent skin and mild shadowing.
Where both volume loss and poor skin quality are present, the two are often used together. Polynucleotides first to improve the skin and dermal filler afterwards if hollowing still needs correcting.
We use Lumi Eyes, and Vitaran, both polynucleotide formulated specifically for the periorbital area. Treatment begins with topical numbing cream, followed by a small number of micro-injections placed around the eye area. Sessions take around 15 to 20 minutes with a 10 minute consultation prior to treatment to ensure safety and discuss desired results.
Most people have two to three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart with a maintence treatment once every six months. Improved skin hydration and brightness appear within the first few weeks, while the collagen-driven improvement in firmness and texture develops over 8 to 12 weeks. Results typically last six to nine months, maintained with a top-up once or twice a year.
Downtime is minimal, expect mild redness and small bumps at the injection points, occasionally minor bruising, all usually settling within 24 to 48 hours. Most patients return to work however it is common to have injection sites or bumps after treatment that self resolve.
Polynucleotide under-eye treatment suits you if your main concerns are crepey texture, fine lines, dullness or thin, tired-looking skin. It’s a good option if you’ve been advised against filler because your skin is too thin, or if you want improvement without an obvious change to your appearance.
It’s less suited to significant hollowing, where volume replacement may be needed, or to true pigmentation, which responds better to skin brightening treatments. Dark circles caused by deep bone structure won’t change with either. At consultation we’ll assess which cause is driving your concern and tell you honestly if something else would serve you better.
Pricing: from £129 per session.
The under-eye area leaves little margin for error. It’s a small, delicate region where the difference between a natural result and an obvious one comes down to injector technique and honest assessment. The eye area is sensitive and high risk so seeking treatment with a highly skilled and experience clinic is essential.
At VIVA, Your treatment is carried out by our team of doctors and nurses only. All our cosmetic injectors are full time injectors with a minimum of 5 years injecting experience.
Every patient begins with a consultation, where we assess what’s actually causing your under-eye concern . Whether its hollowing, skin quality, pigmentation or a combination. Not everyone who comes in for polynucleotides needs them, and we’ll tell you if a different treatment would serve you better. All consultations are free with a bespoke aesthetic plan tailored to your concerns and goals. At VIVA the product we use is Lumi Eyes for under-eye treatment, a polynucleotide formulated specifically for the periorbital area as well as VItaran I and Vitaran II.
