It isn’t uncommon for new patients to enquire about lip filler dissolving, especially when they’ve visited a inexperienced practitioner elsewhere who has left them with uneven results. Though we don’t recommend dissolving lip filler as the first option, there are times when it’s best to dissolve the product completely and start from scratch.
But how does lip filler dissolving work, and how do you know if it’s the best option for you?
The short answer is yes, but it isn’t always what we recommend. For example, if a patient can feel some small bumps within the first few weeks of treatment, it’s important the product is first given time to settle. Often these small complaints will fade or can be worked out with gentle massage. If your lip fillers are uneven, we may suggest adding a very small amount of filler to balance the proportions rather than dissolving the filler completely. Each case is different so a consultation with one of our medical professionals is essential.
It’s always recommended that you speak with the practitioner who treated you if you have concerns about your results. However, we understand that you may not feel comfortable doing so, in which case we can help.
You can, but you must wait at least two weeks for the existing product to fully dissolve. You’ll typically see a difference within 3-4 days but it’s important to wait to ensure the product is entirely broken down and to give your lips a rest between treatments. This isn’t instant so it’s worth bearing in mind that there will be a delay between dissolving and refilling.
The body naturally breaks down filler over time, but we inject a product called hyaluronidase which speeds up the process significantly. Your body produces hyaluronidase already which is why fillers need ‘topping up’, so a dissolving treatment kickstarts the existing function to achieve the same result more quickly.
The process will start with a virtual consultation with one of our medical professionals. If you’re suitable for treatment, you’ll then be booked in for a physical appointment in clinic.
When it comes to the treatment itself, the lips will first be numbed with topical anaesthetic to make the process as comfortable as possible. Hyaluronidase will then be injected into the lips via a series of small injections. This will begin to work immediately, but will take two weeks to show full effects.
The lips are an extremely sensitive part of the body because there are numerous nerve-endings within them, so you may find the process uncomfortable. However, we strive to make it as pain-free as possible, using anaesthetic cream prior to injecting and offering detailed aftercare advice to aid you once you leave clinic.
