How Metabolism Affects Dermal Filler Longevity

Find out long dermal fillers will last after treatment, how metabolism can affect this & how to maintain your dermal fillers after receiving treatment at VIVA Skin Clinics.

Does a faster metabolism affect longevity of dermal filler?

One of the most common questions we get in the clinic is about the longevity of dermal filler. It is easy to understand why knowing how long filler results will last is important to patients. Knowing how long they are likely to last means patients can get a full understanding of maintenance involved.

Whilst there is a set ‘average’ length of time results last, the expected longevity of your fillers will also depend on the specific brand, the location in which they’re injected and how fast the patient’spatients metabolism is.

How long do dermal fillers last on average?

Most hyaluronic acid fillers tend to fall within the 6-to-18-month range, but can be broken down below:

Lip Filler: 6-9 months

Tear Trough Filler: 6-9 months

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: 6-9 months

Cheek Filler: 9-12 months

Temple Filler: 9-12 months

Nasolabial Filler: 9-12 months

Jawline Filler: 12-15 months

Chin Filler: 12-15 months

Does a fast metabolism affect longevity of dermal filler?

For those with a fast metabolic rate, dermal filler will break down much more rapidly than in those with a slower metabolic rate. Individuals with more muscle mass, especially men, will break down product much faster than those with less muscle mass, therefore will not see results last if women.

Due to the nature of dermal fillers not being permanent, it’s important to maintain dermal filler to prolong results. Here’s how you can maintain your dermal fillers in 3 simple steps:

Follow dermal filler after-care guidelines

Immediately after getting fillers, you will be asked to follow the following aftercare:

  • Avoid any heat inducing activities for 24 hours such as strenuous exercise, spas, saunas and hot showers.
  • Avoid pressure on the area for the first 48 hours (no face down massages).
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Avoid active cosmeceutical products (AHAs, retinols, vitamin C) and oil-based makeup for 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching the face too to avoid infection.
  • Avoid facials, waxing, chemical peels, skin needling, microdermabrasion, IPL or laser treatments for 2 weeks after treatment.
  • Do not massage the treatment area unless instructed to do so.

Closely following these guidelines can help to ensure optimal results.

Use the proper skin care routine

While fillers can help you look younger, they work best when paired with the proper skin care routine for your specific skin type and concerns. Following a basic skin care routine with the right cleanser, moisturiser, anti-aging treatment products and spf can accompany dermal fillers perfectly.

About At VIVA Skin Clinics, we work with Obagi Medical Skincare, which a range of medical-grade skincare, which is a much better option than mainstream skincare. One of the main reasons is medical grade skin care has the advantage of having a high percentage of active ingredients compared to high street and over-the-counter skin care.

So, if you’re treating an issue such as acne, then you will probably get better results, because you’ll get a higher concentration of active ingredients.

Follow a personalised dermal filler maintenance plan

It is important to note that no injectable treatment will last forever. The longevity of the product injected normally depends on the product used and what area was treated. Add to this the fact that everyone metabolises these products at a different rate, therefore it is important to keep an open mind to whether you will need a top up sooner than you thought.

Your VIVA injector will advise you on your maintenance plan which normally means, booking back in in 6 months for maximum results.

Furthermore, when we see patients for full face dermal filler treatments, we often use 5+ mls in the first session. After this we usually maintain with 1-2mls every 6 months to keep the beautification ever-lasting!
