WHAT IS A LIP FLIP?
A lip flip is the term used for a non-surgical treatment that uses Botox injections to relax the upper lip muslces exposing more of the pink lip tissue known as the lip mucosa, which increases the volume and appearance of the upper lip without the use of dermal fillers. By exposing the lip tissue this makes the lips appear more fuller and plump. The lip flip procedure is 15-20 minutes and uses neurotoxins such as Botox, Azzalure or Boccoture to temporarily enhibit muscle contraction of the upper lip allowing it to relax and appear more full.
WHERE IS LIP FLIP INJECTIONS
Lip Flip injections are above the lip in the vermillion border in between the nose and the upper lip to target specific muscles around the mouth to help relax the top lip and evert the top lip to make it look more visible creating a “flip” appearance. There is no filler administered during this procedure- a key difference between lip filler and lip flip. Lip flip procedures are performed in 15 minutes using botulinum toxin – with a small insulin syringe.
HOW DOES LIP FLIP WORK?
By injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin, which inhibits mucle contraction, the top or upper lip relaxes and does not contract. The area the Botox is injected is called the vermillion border (upper lip rim). When injected the vermillion border will “flip” up as it relaxes- this is where the word lip flip originates. The treatment is non-permanent and slowly wears off after 3-4 months where re-treatment is needed.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR LIP FLIP?
Lip flip is a cosmetic enhancement and the suitability will depend on the desired look and outcome the patient feels is best for their smile. However, suitability for many patients are:
- If you want more of a “pout” with out the volume of a dermal filler
- Want something that is temporary
- You want more full lips but do not want dermal filler volume
- Your upper lip dissapears when you smile
IS A LIP FLIP BETTER THAN LIP FILLERS?
Lip flips and lip fillers are two different treatment options for lost lip volume and desire for a pout. Lip fillers enhace the upper AND lower lips, address symmetry, last longer and add additional volume. Lip flips only address the upper lip border to raise the vermillion border for lift effect but do not address lip symmetry or lip volume. Lip fillers last longer than lip flips, ranging from 9-12 months on average. Lip Flip treatment is an excellent option for those patients who DO NOT want added volume but want to add more lip and definition.

CAN YOU HAVE BOTH LIP FLIP AND LIP FILLERS?
Yes! Many patients opt for a holistic approach to addressing lost lip volume and shape. When used in combination, lip flip can address the lack of lip while smiling and lip filler can enhance the volume and shape of the lips.
HOW MANY BOTOX UNITS FOR LIP FLIP?
On average 4-6 units in total are injected on the upper lip near the center of lips, or the cupids bow. High Botox units can have complications include difficulty closing the mouth, eating, drinking, and an asymmetric smile. Botox is a prescribed drug so a face to face consultation and medical history is required prior to any cosmetic procedure with Botox.

- Closing the mouth
- Eating
- Drinking
- Dribbling
- Asymmetric Smile
- Puckering
HOW LONG DOES LIP FLIP LAST?
Lip flip with Botox is a temporary treatment that lasts up to 4 months. It is a non-surgical treatment that may require retreament as it is non-permanent.
HOW MUCH IS LIP FLIP?
